#OnThisDay in 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal. This was soon after his return from an African and overseas trip growing support for Umkhonto weSizwe. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment as a 'black man in a white man's court'. Later, following the raid on Lilliesleaf and the Rivonia Trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Capture Site, KZN Operated by the Apartheid Museum The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is famous for this impressive sculpture of Nelson Mandela. Designed by artist Marco Cianfanelli in 2012, it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the capture of Nelson Mandela. It consists of 50 laser cut steel columns that come into focus as Mandela’s face from a particular vantage point.
