Featuring a distinctive plywood-skinned, oval-section streamlined fuselage, the Albatros D.V entered service in May 1917. However, starting in October 1917, it was largely replaced in production by the reinforced Albatros D.Va, which featured an improved upper wing and a revised aileron control system. On June 12, cyclist and pilot Bryan Allen pedaled the Gossamer Albatross across the English Channel. The dream of human-powered flight was very publicly realized on that day! The Museum of Flight is home to the Gossamer Albatross II, the backup aircraft for the big day.
