Normally very shy, secretive birds, male Wilson’s snipe become considerably bolder in the breeding season. They’re often seen high in the air performing their “winnowing” display dives, or standing conspicously on posts and other raised perches, calling to defend their territory. 🎥 by Dan Streiffert #wilsonssnipe #snipe #highdesert #oregondesert #greatbasin #malheurnationalwildliferefuge #friendsofmalheur | Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

We love releases! This Wilson's Snipe was released after 16 days in our care. When brought to CROW, the bird exhibited wing droop in both wings and a wound on the patagium which is the skin flap that assists in obtaining lift while the bird is gliding. After treatment and supportive care by our hospital and rehabilitation team, the Snipe was cleared for release. Note: although we give them release instructions on how to exit the boxes gracefully and in full view of the camera, they don't always

I am Wilson’s snipe – hear me roar. This pretty shorebird attempts to project its call above the chorus of surrounding wildlife sounds at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The Wilson’s snipe is known to have a number of different calls and songs, including an alarming winnowing sound produced in flight by special tail feathers. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary to almost 350 bird species and a vital stop for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway in southeast Oregon. Video: Dan S

Meet Wesley Snipe, a Wilson's Snipe found here in Sitka, Alaska, after being found unable to fly. Wesley was named after the Actor Wesley Snipes, and after a few weeks in our clinic, Wesley is ready to head back out into the wild! Though the long tradition of “snipe hunt” pranks has convinced many people otherwise, Wilson’s Snipes aren’t made up creatures! These plump, long-billed birds are among the most widespread shorebirds in North America. They can be tough to see thanks to their cryptic br

After a short stay in our ICU, our feathered friend, Owen Wilson Snipe, was ready to spread his wings once again! We brought him back to the very spot in Sitka, Alaska where he was found after a window collision. With a graceful takeoff, Owen vanished into the lush woods. A Wilson's Snipe bouncing and grooving along while poking about in the mud for food. The strongest hypothesis for this motion is to deter predators. This bouncing motion is done when when the bird is being watched, and it is done in open habitat where it's more likely that a predator would spot them. The Snipe has detected a potential threat and is letting the predator know that this bird has plenty of energy to fly off and escape, so it's not even worth the attempt. There's another possible exp

And now, thirty seconds of snipe feeding! • The pudgy, long-billed Wilson’s snipe migrates into the Harney Basin in large numbers every spring to breed. Most depart in the fall, but a few individuals will linger through the winter, usually turning up on the P Ranch Christmas Bird Count every year. 🎞️: Peter Pearsall #wilsonssnipe #malheurnationalwildliferefuge #friendsofmalheur | Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

A winter visitor to Florida, Wilson’s snipes are typically found in wetlands, but can be difficult to spot due to their stealth camouflage. Surprisingly, this guy let me approach within a couple feet of him to catch some video footage and photos on my iPhone. These sandpipers are incredibly fast, flying up to 60 miles per hour. I found it interesting to learn that the term “American Sniper” came from the challenge of hunting these birds based on their camouflage, speed, awareness and quick fligh
