Gustav Klimt painted Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer between 1914 and 1916, capturing the young daughter of August and Serena Lederer, two of his most important patrons in Vienna. The Lederers were prominent Jewish art collectors, and the portrait became part of their celebrated collection. In 1938, after Nazi Germany annexed Austria, the family’s property and artworks were seized. Much of their collection was later destroyed, but this portrait survived.
