Buchanan Castle is the site of an earlier castle, historically owned by Clan Buchanan who are known to have held the estate of their name since at least 1231. On the death of the last laird of Buchanan in 1681, the castle and estate were bought by the 3rd Marquess of Montrose (of the Graham family). In 1836 the castle passed to the 4th Duke of Montrose.
