DeMaria has run Everett in iron-fisted fashion since 2007. Basically, what Carlo wants, he gets. His signature achievement, of course, is bringing in the Encore casino — the biggest thing to happen to the old industrial town on the Mystic River in many years.

The Everett City Council unanimously voted no confidence in Mayor Carlo DeMaria after a Massachusetts Inspector General report found that the city had overpaid him $180,000 and leveled claims of impropriety by DeMaria and his administration regarding the payments.

Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria received improper longevity payments over the course of five years, the Inspector General Found, many of which were concelead by DeMaria and his staff. The City Council first adopted an ordinance awarding a mayoral longevity payment in October 2016.

The Everett City Council blasted longtime Mayor Carlo DeMaria through a ‘no confidence’ vote following accusations that he pocketed $180,000 in improper bonuses and tried to hide it. The unanimous vote happened on Monday night and will become official at the next city council meeting later this month.
