The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) issued evacuation orders for homes near Mile Markers 24 and 25, with approximately 105 Kahikinui homestead lots in the area. Door-to-door evacuations were also conducted by Maui Police Department and MFD, according to an official update.
"A tree had broken the man’s fall and prevented him from plunging another hundred feet or so to the caldera floor, which could have resulted in his death," Hawaii Volcanoes National Park officials said.
