People’s Union USA says the blackout comes in response to the fact that “corporations and banks only care about their bottom line.”

Customers across the United States are looking to send a message Friday to companies that have rolled back their DEI initiatives in the form of a 24-hour consumer boycott, also known as the “Feb. 28 Economic Blackout.

The blackout was organized by The People’s Union USA and is the movement’s first action, described as “a symbolic start to economic resistance, a day where we show corporations and politicians that we control the economy,” per the group’s website.

U.S. consumers are being encouraged to abstain from purchasing any non-essential goods today—on Feb. 28—as part of a 24-hour buying blackout that aims to showcase the economic power of everyday people.
