Pope Francis, 88, is in critical condition due to double pneumonia and a severe lung infection. While receiving high oxygen flows and blood transfusions, doctors fear the onset of sepsis, which could further complicate his condition given his advanced age and respiratory issues.

Francis remains in critical condition but has not suffered any additional crises, the Vatican said Sunday evening, after reporting Saturday the pope suffered a “long asthmatic respiratory crisis” days after he was hospitalized for pneumonia.

Pope Francis met with the Vatican Secretary of State to approve new decrees for sainthood and schedule a formal meeting to set the dates for their canonization.
