The 14-year-old accused of killing Newark police Detective Joseph Azcona is the only person charged in the case after multiple people were taken into custody the night of the shooting, authorities said Monday morning.

Joseph Azcona, 26, was still in his police car when he was shot on Friday night, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

A 14-year-old has been charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon in the fatal shooting of a Newark police officer Friday, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens says.

A Newark police officer was killed in the line of duty Friday night in a shooting that also wounded a second officer, according to police union officials. The officers were shot at 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret Street in Newark, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
