The Department of Transportation is still requiring airlines to reduce flight schedules at major airports nationwide, even as the shutdown winds down.

Travel experts spoke to Newsday about some tips for traveling in the coming days and weeks after the Federal Aviation Administration said it would impose a 10% reduction in flights at major airports across the country, beginning Friday.

Overall, United has canceled more than 100 flights each day, from Friday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 9, the airline's website showed. Of those, 34 United flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Chicago O'Hare International Airport Friday were cut, with that number increasing to 38 Saturday.

Numerous flights into and out of Charleston International Airport were cancelled or delayed Monday amid reduced flight schedules impacting many airports. Charleston International Airport warned travelers that the Federal Aviation Administration had directed airlines to temporarily reduce flight schedules across 40 major U.

Even if the government reopens by the end of the week, it could take longer for the air traffic schedule to return to normal.
