In the bottom of the ninth, the Rockies tried to rally, despite Sam Hilliard hitting into a double play to make the come-from-behind attempt with two outs. Goodman smashed his 11th homer of the year to cap off a three-hit night and pull the Rockies within three at 10-7.

Manager Bob Melvin said “there’s a chance” Verlander returns from the 15-day injured list during San Francisco’s upcoming nine-game home stand against the Cleveland Guardians, Boston Red Sox and Miami Marlins. Verlander threw a live bullpen during the Giants’ previous series against the Colorado Rockies in Denver.

Colorado held a 5-2 lead over the Giants going into the ninth in the series opener on Tuesday at Coors Field. Up to that point, they had timely hitting, got a decent start from Carson Palmquist, and the bullpen had been flawless. Taking the mound for the Giants will be left-hander Robbie Ray, who enters tonight’s game with a 2.44 ERA, 3.03 FIP, with 87 strikeouts to 31 walks in 77.1 innings pitched. His last start was in the Giants’ 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres last Thursday, in which he allowed two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk in seven innings.

Matt Chapman has already gone to the injured list with a sprained right hand, but the San Francisco Giants third baseman could be out through the rest of the month.
